Felicitous vs. Cantankerous

Please excuse me just this once while I B.R.A.G. on my kids. We play lots of music, greatly varied, at home and both kids enjoy. We dance and shriek like banshees for about 30 minutes of each day. The two year old has gotten to what I like to call the "stoner" level of music appreciation:

"Like song, Mama!"

or

"Pretty!"

Now. The five year old. Oh, the five year old. The bane and joy of my existence, he is. Tonight, we started with Beethoven's Symphony No. 9 Chorale (Ode to Joy). His response to the music?

"This is felicitous!"

After switching to Bach we spent a few minutes of picking out instruments on Brandenburg Concertos ("That's a flute! I hear violins!"). Then Toccata and Fugue ensues with its solemn organ tones.

"Mama, this one is cantankerous."

Can't spell 'em yet but he can sure use 'em in a sentence.

Thank you for your indulgence. I will try to return to more scholarly or adult themed (as in, if I'd never had kids I'd still care) topics later this week.

  1. My favorite classical pieces are the 2nd movement of Beethoven's 9th and Mozart's overture to The Marriage of Figaro. We also have a lot of music in the house, more so than TV.

  2. Rick,

Mine are Beethoven's 9th, without question, a buttload of Bach, and Mozart's Requiem. And Bolero if I'm feeling randy...

I'm also partial to classical guitar. Got to see Christopher Parkening a few years ago and it was amazing.

  3. And there are people telling me 'pert' is not a middle grade word. Hah!

Love this one, you Mom you.

I'm partial to Mozart and Chausson (sp?), though the latter has been dubbed depressing before (not by me).

  4. Sarah:

"Pert?" Really? Whatever. Obviously not a pro, here, but I do not understand fear of words. In fact, I would argue that one or two they may not know or use are a strength in an MG work!

And yes, despite fighting it every step of the way (I mean since the first stick turned blue and I burst into tears like a 17 year old who wasn't going to fit into her prom dress), I am a MOM. Mother Nature knew what she was doing when she invented hormones.

    Crafty bi-atch, that one.

  6. My kid got in trouble for his sarcastic comments (at 6)during school - a very proud day for me 'cause I knew he was mine.

    Amazing children, both of them!
